Wellness Blog

Like most people in the Roaring Fork Valley, I place a high priority on my health. I exercise, I dabble in yoga and meditation, I eat well, and I take an assortment of supplements to augment the nutrients in my food. And like most people, I have been navigating my own path to wellness through newsletters, books and all manner of internet-based resources. And we really don’t have much of a choice but to go it alone: Our healthcare system is not designed to help us avoid illness by proactively leading us to wellness. Rather, it’s designed to treat us after we are ill or have the symptoms of illness.

It is that healthcare truism that led me to check out the WIN Institute. A Basalt-based wellness center, the WIN Institute was founded by Dr. Dave Jensen to fill the healthcare void that is so obviously absent for people like me: a place to steer you toward not getting sick in the first place.

I’ll be visiting Dr. Jensen and his staff over the next few months to experience firsthand how they have merged Eastern and Western modalities under one roof to best guide people to wellness, whether they’re sick or injured when they show up or not. Even better, Dr, Jensen has told me that his staff assists patients in making sense of their own health plans, so they can do as much as possible—be it acupuncture or chiropractry or thermograms ( more advanced type of mammogram) or any number of other things—within the scope of what their insurer will pay for.

Check back here periodically to hear about my experiences. I’ll start with a general checkup and my first-ever visit to a chiropractor in about a week or so. Consider me your guinea pig.
