Being a soccer fan in Aspen can be a lonely road. The big Champion’s League semi-final between FC Barcelona and Inter Milan that had me glued to my computer screen a month ago? (Um…sorry, boss.) You’d be lucky to find five people who knew it was going on. Aspen feels as disinterested in soccer as the rest of America, despite its international flavor in winter. Until the World Cup, that is. Every four years, during the month that the tournament takes place, the valley’s soccer fans come out in force. Games are on TVs all over the valley. September and early October are my absolute favorite times of year for mountain biking. The gloriously golden fall colors splash across the mountainsides, the average temperature drops to an aerobically-comfy range and I have the singletracks all to myself. It’s apparent why so many locals don’t like to tell visitors about early fall, our oh-so-sweet “sleeper season.” But the word about our amazing autumns has gotten out! I recently had the good fortune of meeting two brothers who not only share my enthusiasm for spectacular fall beauty and solitude but also a passion for mountain biking.
