I was lucky, because of my connection with Wagner through my husband’s ski shop, to get periodic updates about my precious, customized skis while they were being made. It’s kind of like smelling chocolate chip cookies baking -- it just makes your mouth water more following their progress. “Our skis are done,” Mike told me one day, not too long after my second conversation with Pete Wagner. [To see Part I of this blog, click here.] I had two nearly hour-long conversations with Wagner Custom Skis founder Pete Wagner during the process of designing my ski, and have no idea how he could have possibly gotten any useful information out of them. Lacking knowledge of ski jargon (what exactly is camber, anyway?) I was flailing around the conversation, relating every topic back to what I like and dislike about my current skis -- Volkl Mantras -- and making tricky requests like, “light but punches through crud,”... When you’re building a custom ski, does it matter if your regular activities include sex, cigars, “420 activities” or lighting things on fire? This is one of the things I ponder as I’m filling out my skier profile on the Wagner Custom Skis website. The skier profile, or skier DNA, is the first in a series of steps to creating your very own, unique, personalized skis that will be like nobody else’s in the whole world. Length, dimensions, flex, camber and graphics – they will all be fit to my tastes, my likes, my body type, my style. Talk about fulfilling a fantasy, at least for this skier.
