Traveling through Europe, Bob and Cindy Glowacki gravitate toward the pubs—the place to find a hearty meal, an inviting atmosphere, and a selection of fine beverages. When the space opened up adjacent to their restaurant, the Steak Pit, they brought the pub environment to Aspen. With genuinely friendly bars becoming scarce in town, crowds bark the praises of the Double Dog.
The Glowackis note their pub doesn’t replicate the Irish version—but it would take sharp eyes to notice anything lacking. The Double Dog menu features traditional fare: Beef and Guinness stew and fish’n’chips. While the dozen beers on tap rotate, one constant is the pride of Dublin—Guinness. On Tuesday nights, the Double Dog inches closer to Ireland, as the Irish-music group the Crowlin Ferlies set up in a corner.
The Double Dog is stamped with unique details, which make the spot more distinguished. The prime rib sandwich and the
8-oz. burger come from the same kitchen that cooks the Steak Pit’s signature cuts of beef. In addition to pub standards, there’s grilled Atlantic salmon, crab cakes and a chicken club. In the European tradition, the Double Dog proudly pours the local brew, from the Aspen Brewing Company.
The dog theme puts a personal stamp on the pub. The Glowackis are dog lovers, a passion they let all visitors share: Send a photo of your pooch, and it will be posted on the staircase. Despite the name, the Double Dog doesn’t discriminate; hence, the Cat Lover’s Corner and, in a nod to Jimmy Buffett, Parrothead Parkway Shrine.
Dog, cat; Irishman, American; meat eater, fish lover—all are welcome at the Double Dog, Aspen’s neighborhood pub.
Located next to the Steak Pit at the corner of Monarch and Hopkins. Open nightly 4:30 p.m. to closing.
